Udaipur the city of Lakes

Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia Rajput clan as the new capital of the Mewar Kingdom. Seeking of more secure location than Chittorgarh, the city was established in the Girwa Valley near Lake Pichola. It is known for its valiant history, independence and stunning lakes and palaces.

  • Foundation (1559) : Following the siege of Chittorgarh by Mughal Emperor Akbar, Maharana Uday Singh II established Udaipur in 1559.
  • Capital Shift : The capital was moved from the vulnerable Chittorgarh to the naturally fortified, hilly and water rich location in the Aravallies.
  • Resistance : The rular of Udaipur (Mewar) are known for their fierce, long- standing resistance against foreign rule, particularly the Mughals.
  • Maharan Partap : Son of Udai Singh II, Maharana Partap continued the resistance against the Mughals, including the famous Battle of Haldighati in 1576.
  • British Era : In 1818 , Udaipur entered into a treaty with the British East India Company , becoming a princely state in British India.
  • Merger : Upon India’s independence in 1947 , the state of Udaipur merged with the United State of Rajasthan in 1948.
  • Culture Legacy : The City Palace, built over centuries by different rulers, is a testament to the Mewar dynasty’s architecture and history.
Today Udaipur is famous as the “City of Lakes” and the “Venice of the East”.
